New Release: AarDHD’s “Flow State” - a novel approach to binaural beats
AarDHD’s debut track “Flow State” represents a significant technical achievement in binaural beat production, engineered here at Fidget Studios by Barry Diston.
“Flow State” is more than just ambient music. It’s a functional tool designed to aid focus and concentration, built around a precisely engineered 11Hz binaural beat. To experience the full brainwave entrainment effect, listening on headphones is essential, as the binaural effect requires slightly different frequencies in each ear.
For long-time collaborator AarDHD (Paul Taylor), this project was a unique challenge: how do you embed a clinical brainwave entrainment frequency into a track that is musically coherent and beautiful in its own right?
The answer required months of experimentation and preparation, and a novel approach to audio engineering.
Creating a binaural beat involves sending slightly different frequencies to each ear, which the brain interprets as a third, rhythmic pulse. The standard method often results in a sterile, clinical sound, or music that is more drone than melody. The goal here was different: to make the entrainment effect an integral part of the music itself.
This involved painstaking work to find the right instruments capable of carrying the frequency difference. The team experimented extensively with synthesised string and pad layers, discovering that only specific timbres could hold the necessary frequency separation without creating unpleasant dissonance or sonic artefacts.
Each note in the composition required its own precise musical and mathematical adjustments. Rather than simply detuning one instrument, the team developed a method to create a balanced offset, subtly shifting the pitch of stereo instrument layers in opposite directions for every single note played. This meticulous, note-by-note process ensures the 11Hz pulse is consistent and effective, while the track remains harmonically stable and musically engaging.
The result is a track that achieves what most functional music doesn’t: it is both a scientifically grounded focus tool and a genuinely moving piece of ambient art.
